Description
Peer Tutoring
Introduction:
During the Covid-19 Pandemic, there have been a lot of learning gaps due to online learning and other
causes. Many of our teachers have told us that the newer groups of students that are coming into the
school (for example, grade 10’s that have gone to high school in 2021), are underperforming
compared to previous years. A lot of these learning gaps start happening in Jr High and Elementary,
and if left unchecked, can cause learning problems further on. Thus, the basic idea is to create a free
weekly drop-in program for Elementary School Students grades 4-6 and Jr High Students (Grades 7-
9). On Tuesday every week, they will be tutored by High School students, and helped in any areas
they might have issues with or can come over to learn a new topic and spread learning throughout the
community. Our current plan is to offer both group and one-to-one time and help them with learning
newer concepts, visualizing ideas, or even homework.
Plan:
Tentative Start Date – March 15 th , 2022
Tentative Start Date – June 28 th , 2022
Total Number of Weeks – 16
Number of Sessions Per Day – Two (We are planning one session for grades 4-6, and then another
one for grades 7-9, each session will last one hour)
Venue – Room at Terwillegar Community Rec Centre
Number of Participants – We are trying to book a room with a 60-person max capacity, however
Covid might impose some restrictions on the number of students, we will try to keep no more than 50
students per session, allowing for a manageable amount of students.
Members – The project will rely on a number of weekly high school volunteers, however, there are
three executive members will be present throughout the program and will be responsible for the
running of the program:
Anmol Dubey – [email protected]
Devon Brewster – [email protected]
Jonathan Li – [email protected]
Benefits to the Community –
As we have already discussed in the introduction, there are numerous advantages to holding a weekly
tutoring session like this in our community. It will help students in need of academic help to get some
of that help and fill whatever knowledge gaps they may have. It will help promote an environment
where learning is emphasized on. It will provide a safe space for students to go once a week and
spend time focusing on schoolwork and helping the students build better futures. Those are just a few
of the numerous benefits a program like this can have.
